Forms of Verb in English Grammar

A verb is as word or groups of words that shows what somebody or something does, in what state somebody or something is, or what is becoming of somebody or something. In other words, we can say that “a verb is a word used to say something about some person, place or things”.

Verb (क्रिया) वह शब्द है जो किसी व्यक्ति, वस्तु या स्थान के बारे में बताता हो, अथवा काम होने या काम करने को व्यक्त करता हो, उसे हम क्रिया (Verb) कहते है |

Examples:

Ram is going to market.

Sita was writing a letter to her husband.

He has played cricket with his friend.

ऊपर लिखे तीनो वाक्यों में क्रिया का उपयोग हो रहा है पहले वाक्य में go  दुसरे वाक्य मेंwrite or तीसरे वाक्य में playverb  रही है इन तीनो क्रियाओं का उपयोग कर्ता (Subject) के द्वारा अपने कार्य को पूरा करने के लिये किया जा रहा है |

How to find a Verb: (क्रिया ज्ञात करने की विधि)

1. English Sentence (अंग्रेजी वाक्य) का हिंदी में अनुवाद करो जो शब्द हिंदी अनुवाद में वाक्य के अंत में आये वह शब्द Verb (क्रिया) कहलाता है |

Examples:

Ram speaks the truth. (English Sentence)

राम सच बोलता है | (हिंदी अनुवाद)

ऊपर लिखे वाक्य मेंबोलता है क्रिया (verb) आया है अत: Speak (बोलता है) एक क्रिया (Verb) है |

2. साधारणत: वाक्य में कर्ता क्या करता है, ने क्या किया है, और क्या करेगा, को क्या हुआ को लगाने से उत्तर में verb आएगा |

Examples: Ram reads a book.

ऊपर लिखे वाक्य (Sentence) में राम कर्ता (Subject) है अब आपने प्रशन (Question) किया की “राम क्या करता है” तो आपको उत्तर मिला (Answer) “की राम पढता है” इसीलिये “पढता है” (Read) एक क्रिया  (Verb) है |

Examples: We have learnt the lesson.

ऊपर लिखे वाक्य (Sentence) में We कर्ता (Subject) है अब आपने प्रशन (Question) किया की “हमने क्या किया है” तो आपको उत्तर मिला (Answer) “की हमने पाठ याद किया है” इसीलिये “याद किया है” (learnt) एक क्रिया  (Verb) है |

Examples: He died in an accident.

ऊपर लिखे वाक्य (Sentence) में He कर्ता (Subject) है अब आपने प्रशन (Question) किया की “क्या हुआ है” तो आपको उत्तर मिला (Answer) “की वह मर गया है” इसीलिये “मर गया है” (died) एक क्रिया  (Verb) है |

3. साधारांत: English language में Subject (कर्ता) के बाद क्रिया (Verb) का प्रयोग होता है |

Examples:

Ram goes to School with his friend.

She took her dinner with me yesterday.

Geeta reads her story book.

Sonia went to Delhi with her family last year.

Principal and Auxiliary verbs:

Look at the examples.

I rarely take tea.

Radha likes badminton.

“The verbs take and likes express meaning without any help. Such Verbs are called Principal Verbs”.

ऐसी मुख्या क्रिया जिनसे कार्य के करने का या होने का बोध हो उन्हें Principal Verbs कहते है

Now look at other examples:

I have completed my work.

She was going to market.

I can do my work.

In first sentence have, in second sentence was and in third sentence can is the helping verb and completed, going and do are the principal verbs.

“So, helping verbs are also called Auxiliary Verbs”

Transitive and Intransitive Verbs:

Look at these sentences:

She brought some books.

You like mangoes.

In the second sentence, the action denoted by like passes from the subject (You) to the object (Mango).

In the first sentence, the action denoted by brought passes from the subject (She) to the object (Books). So like and brought are transitive verbs.

“A Transitive verb denotes an action that passes from the subject to the object”.

“(Verb) क्रिया के साथ किसी Object का प्रयोग किया गया हो तो उसे Transitive Verb (सकर्मक क्रिया) कहते है |”

Now look at this sentence.

She died last month.

The sun rose.

The verb died and rose denotes an action that does not go beyond the subject. So died and rose are intransitive verbs.

“An Intransitive Verbs denotes an action that does not go beyond the subject”.

जिस (Verb) क्रिया के साथ किसी object का प्रयोग किये बिना Sentence का meaning पूरी तरह समझ में जाये, उसे Intransitive Verbs (अकर्मक क्रिया) कहते है |”

Regular Verb and Irregular Verb:

1. Regular verbs are those which have suffix “d” or “ed” for the past tense and the past participle.

2. Irregular verbs are those which don’t have the suffixed or “ed” for the past tense and past participle.
